Heanor Town 5-1 Graham Street Prims

Saturday 4th September had been designated as "non-league football day" and we picked a cracking game to go and watch. This was our first East Midlands Counties League game of the season, although we had seen Heanor recently when they played at Borrowash in the F.A. Cup.

Prims play at Borrowash, next door to Victoria, but the club name is derived from their early days in 1904 when they were a primitive Methodist Church, and from Graham Street which is actually off Osmaston Road near the old Baseball Ground.....

Heanor went into this game unbeaten in four, with a goal difference of +13, while their visitors had won two out of the five games they have played so far, and were on a goal difference of -1. The game didn't start off too badly for Prims, and they tested Town keeper Mark Frost early on. They were guilty a lapse in defense in the 6th minute that handed Heanor the lead - centre-half George Walker heading down to the unmarked GRAHAM WELLS who rifled the ball home from about 10 yards.

From then on it was Prims who were asking most of the questions, and Heanor had to thank Frost on three occasions as he thwarted the Prims strikers. Heanor front man Dan Williams should have made it 2-0 to the hosts on 23, but his header from a corner flew well over.

Dave Kinder in the Prims goal did well to keep out Gary Webster in the 33rd minute, diving well at the Heanor skippers feet to block. Heanor did manage another goal before the break - this time a long ball into the area was met at the far post by WELLS who saw his header loop over Kinder and nestle in the back of the net. Frost was forced into one more block just before the break, on this occasion saving Walkers blushes after he had given the ball away to Tom Widdison.. H-T 2-0

Had a wander around the pitch at half time and persuaded Kev " David Bailey" Goodman to get me an "arty-farty" shot of the birds chattering away on one of the pylons......although when I asked him to "take a pic of those birds" he wandered off mentioning something about the one with a white hand-bag for some reason!!

Heanor were soon celebrating their third goal of the afternoon, when in the 50th minute Walker made a strong, powerful run throught the Prims defence ending up in the box before calmly picking out WELLS who crashed the ball home from 12 yards. On 53, Frost had to make a superb finger-tip save after the Prims tried to get back into the game.

The visitors then brought on Charlie Bangura who teased Heanor left back Richard Hodgman before finding CHRIS BRIGGS in the area. - the no.8 fired past Frost with the help of a slight deflection. Frost did well to block again on the hour mark, but Heanor by this time had replaced a couple of players and were looking a little fresher than their opponents. Town added their fourth after 79 minutes, JAMES WHITEHEAD converting from the spot after a handball decision that seemed a tad dubious. A shot from Josh Wain hit the Prims centre-half on the arm and not only was this deemed a handball, the player was given a straight red as well. Very harsh.

Right on full-time, Heanor added a fifth and this was again a looping header that evaded keeper Kinder - JAMES WHITEHEAD as surprised as anyone when the ball actually crossed the line!! 5-1 looks emphatic, but Prims made a good game of it and I think they were slighly unfortunate with the looping headers and the penalty award. F-T 5-1

Last time we visited the Town Ground, we Christened a friend from our Eastwood Town days as " the tall-lad" - and he was present at this game as well. We found out at a later game that his name was Chris - and he staggered both Kev and myself by handing over £3.00 for the APTCOO charity -- £0.50 for each goal scored. What a fantastic gesture and if you look at the picture below, you will see " the tall lad" -- can you guess which one he is????

What a great evening out - and for just £2 !!

Eight goals, seven yellow cards, one red card, a penalty missed, a penalty scored - and all in the very pleasant company of good friends Phil Mumby and Chris Daglish -- football mad the pair of 'em, although they had never been to the Welfare ground before. This was the CML Supreme Division at it's best, and worst!! Pinxton were without two of their regular starters, Ben Bacon and Kieron DeBrouwer, but they still made short work of last season's Premier Division Champions.

For the first quarter of an hour there was little between the teams, but when Pinxton's no.10 WAYNE COOKE ran in from the left and planted the ball across Warsop keeper Shaw and into the net, the visitors lost their heads for a while. First their no. 11 Eason was booked for a rash challenge, and he was followed into the book almost straight after by Camm.

Eason was a little unlucky to see his shot/cross skim across the bar on 37, but that was the closest they had come to scoring - and right on full-time as Mr. Mumby and Mr. Daglish had exited for another pint, Pinxton doubled their lead from the penalty spot - THOMAS firing home after Jones had been tripped by keeper Shaw. H-T 2-0

Pinxton's Josh Parker was cautioned three minutes into the second half, and he was soon joined in the Ref's black book by Warsop's no. 10 Jenkins. COOKE grabbed his second of the game on 54, cutting in from the left before hitting an unstoppable drive past Shaw. The shot was so well hit that the ball was in the net before Shaw could react.

Shaw did make a terrific double save two minutes later, foiling Housley and Vincent, but he was soon picking the ball out of the back of the net again. This time he mis-judged a corner from the right taken by EVANS, and watched in despair as the ball went over him and straight in!

On 65, SENIOR smashed home a 25 yard free-kick to make it 5-0, but the next action was at the other end of the pitch when Fletcher was upended in the Pinxton box. Jenkins ran up and smashed his spot kick well wide of the post then two minutes later, to compound his indifferent evening, he was shown a 2nd yellow followed by the inevitable red.

Unbelievably, it was the visitors who scored the next goal, CREW firing home from the corner of the box. The goal celebrations were barely over though when Cooke broke free and unselfishly laid the ball across the box for EVANS to slide home.

COOKE completed his hat-trick on 88 - a quick break away saw the striker shrug off two challenges before being tackled by Shaw. The keeper failed to hold onto the ball though, and Cooke picked himself up and calmly slotted home from 6 yards. F-T 7-1 Great stuff!!!

Bank Holiday game 2 - CMFL Supreme Division.

After watching Calvo on Saturday, I was a little unsure whether to bother with this game or not -- as it happened it was well worth the time and effort as Calverton ran out comfortable winners, handing Town their 4th straight defeat of the season.

Not pretty at times, but with Clarson, Black and Leeds all combining well, Welfare looked the better team and Clarson's finishing was second to none! Kimberley had a couple of decent efforts early on - one header flashed past the outside of the post with Welfare keeper Grantham well beaten. They had one shot actually in the net as well, but this was ruled out for offside by the eagle-eyed linesman.

On the half-hour, CLARSON grabbed his and Calverton's second after being played through from midfield. The no. 10 controlled superbly before racing into the area and firing past the Town keeper. H-T -0-2

Calverton deservedly took the lead on 24. They had forced the young Kimberley keeper into several saves throughout the first 20 minutes or so, but when the ball was played in from the right on this occasion, all he could do was parry it straight into the path of ALEX CLARSON who had the simple task of tapping home from close range.

Had a chance to renew our friendship with Danny Bryant - not seen him since he was relieved of his duties as Hucknall Town manager last season. Also met up with Mr. Mac again, and Brian Dennett again.....

CLARSON completed his hat-trick in the 49th minute, but his fouth on 69 was the best of the lot - a superb volley from the edge of the box that hit one post, went into the goal then hit the other post, before bouncing back into play -- the linesman had no doubt that the goal was ok, and CLARSON waited a few seconds before celebrating as he wasn't quite sure if the goal had been allowed or not! Two minutes later, no. 12 JOE MAJORS hit Calvo's fifth, and effectively ended the game as a contest. F-T 0-5


Much better from Calverton, but Kimberley are in desperate need of a few quality players, otherwise season 2010-2011 is going to be a hard slog for the Stags.........

Bank Holiday game 1 -- Evo-Stik Division One South encounter - quite entertaining with both teams playing some decent football at times. In an ideal world, Rainworth would have come away from Stoke Lane with something, but a defensive lapse in the 75th minute saw them concede from a corner, a goal that decided the game and gave the home team all three points.

Look what I've got, lads!!!!!

Caught up with Brian Dennett and Mr. Mac again, but we then decided to try and find a bit of shelter from the damn awful pong that sometimes permeates the air at Stoke Lane....ened up behind the Rainworth goal for most of the first half, and had a natter to my old mucker "Mintie" and his lad.

The game started off with both teams seemingly wary of each other, and they cancelled each other out superbly! Hales was the far busier of the keepers, but it was his long punt out of defence that lead to the Rainworth opener, CRAIG MITCHELL latching onto the clearance before rounding West and rolling home.

Rainworth then came under intense pressure as the home team looked for an equaliser, again Hales having to be on his toes as Carlton tried time and again to level. It looked like the Wrens would hold out until the break, but then Gardner's ball in from the left found ALEX TROUGHTON, he made no mistake slotting under Hales. H-T 1-1

Went into the clubhouse at half-time to see if there were any scores on Sky Sports news, but it appears thathe Conference isn't worthy of coverage. So back out and for the second half we stood behind the Rainworth goal again! Plenty of action in the second half, and most of it in front of the Wrens goal - Carlton were unlucky not to take the lead on 53 when a ball in from the right went straight across goal and missed everyone before going out for a goal kick.

Wrens skipper Lee Wilkinson was unlucky to concede a corner on 75 - but Carlton took full advantage when Shaw's ball in flicked across the goal off Gardner, and ASHLEY KITCHEN bundled the ball over the line from a couple of yards out. Rainworth tried in vain to get back on terms, but even with Neil West giving a somewhat eccentric display of keeping, the Wrens couldn't find the equaliser. F-T 2-1

Typical!!!! I've just posted about how the goals are flying in this season, and this happens! Not only was it a poor scoreline for APTCOO, it was an awful game as well. I suppose it's fair to say we don't get many bad games during the season, but the only saving grace about this match was the lady Assistant Referee!! At least when the game went a bit lame, we had something nice to look at!!

Calverton have a new squad again, and Newark have lost a lot of last seasons CML cup wining team - between them they had managed only 5 goals before kick off, so maybe, in hindsight, this should have been one to avoid!!! Thanks to Rick Lane for letting me have the team details - I feel sorry for him, he has to write a report about this match - I think he will struggle to get the 8 paragraphs required....

Early on, Welfare's no. 10 Clarson saw his 22 yard free kick fly just over the bar, then his team-mate Leeds had an effort blocked by Town keeper Riley. Clarson was one-on-one with Riley on 22, but failed to capitalise, firing straight at the Newark keeper.

Newark scored somewhat against the run of play in the 26th minute, their no. 8 Porter firing the ball across the goal from the right, finding LUKE PARSONS who somehow managed to squeeze the ball home at the far post. H-T 0-1

Leeds played in a shot/cross on 66 that scraped the front of the Newark bar - 10 minutes later the home team hit the woodwork again, this time Clarson's fierce drive rattling the bar with Riley well beaten.

Calverton went down to 10 men when their no. 12 was sent off for a reckless over the top challenge on Newark midfielder James Trentini. The no. 6 had to be stretchered from the pitch - it is to be hoped the injury is not too serious.

There was nearly a twist in the tail as in the time added on for the injury, Calverton were awarded a penalty for a trip in the area. Up stepped Clarson to fire the ball at Riley - even worse was the shot from the loose ball by Black - he hit it miles over the bar when it was just a case of side-footing home. F-T 0-1
